The artwork, The Heart of Denton, celebrates Denton’s vibrant community. It’s a tribute to the rhythm, energy, and heart that make Denton feel like home. In the past two years I’ve had the pleasure of creating site-specific artwork for Walmart stores across the US, but this one is the largest I’ve worked on so far. Plus, Denton is my home and that made the project even more meaningful and personal.

This Sam’s Club mural is my second project for Walmart in town, and my goal was to capture Denton’s warmth, creativity, and spirit.
At the center stands the historic Courthouse on the Square, surrounded by shady trees. Around it, I layered the elements that make Denton so unique: live concerts in the downtown square, food trucks, park trails with runners, UNT and TWU Universities pride reflected in the Texas flag painted in the “Mean Green” colors, and even my own kids who grew up in Denton, enjoying ice cream from a beloved hometown shop.
The art process for this large scale piece combined careful observation with personal storytelling. The wall’s dimensions shaped the composition around the two doors and the space above the entrance. I drew a rough sketch of the outlines, anchoring the scene with the Courthouse building and local park trails. Layers of community life were added next—musicians playing outdoors, people dancing, picnicking, and enjoying the day, along with colorful food trucks along the edge.

As the artwork process developed, I added layers of colors and introduced vibrant floral and musical motifs, highlights, and texture. I also refined the balance between open space and storytelling moments, making sure each detail contributed to the overall flow. Throughout, I wove in Sam’s Club blues and brand colors to connect the piece back to its home while keeping the Denton community spirit front and center. The final result is a vibrant scene that celebrates Denton’s history, music, food, and above all—its people.
Three musical instruments encore the bottom part of the piece, next to the store doors. Music is woven throughout the mural as Denton enjoys a vibrant music scene, from live bands playing in local venues and bars to the Jazz and Blues festivals that draw in enthusiastic crowds, both Dentonites and folks from out of town.
The project was part of the Walmart Community Mural Program, a celebration of communities across America. Inspired by the community and together with every store manager, each mural reflects the local diversity and cultural references.
